Who Am I?

Alan Schlichting, owner and founder of The Singing Athlete Voice Studio, brings decades of experience in musical theater, voice, and classical music from a career ranging from regional and touring productions to New York City. He holds a B.M. in Music Composition from Westminster Choir College of Rider University, where the rigorous vocal curriculum led him to sing major choral literature with the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony, Berlin Philharmonic, and Vienna Philharmonic.

As a NYC-based actor until relocating to Austin in 2020, Alan held a long-term job as a singing server at the world-famous Ellen’s Stardust Diner, singing and waiting tables in between acting contracts.

Some favorite contracts include:

National Tour: Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story (Norman Petty, Keys/Saxophone).

Regional: Jerry Lee Lewis in Million Dollar Quartet (Endstation Theatre Company, VA), Mendel/Motel in Fiddler On The Roof (Riverside Center, VA), Feuilly/Ensemble in Les Miserables (Sharon Playhouse, CT).

Music Director/Conductor: Seussical, You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow, Bar(d), Godspell, Guys and Dolls, A Christmas Story, Brigadoon, Les Misérables, Phantom (Yeston), The Addams Family, Beauty and the Beast, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Ring of Fire: The Johnny Cash Musical.

Alan is a successful vocal coach, music director, and accompanist, working with all ages and skill levels in educational, summer camp, and regional venues. His philosophy is to connect actors to their most authentic voice by staying connected to the story, the moment, and the physical body. He maintains the occasional side gig as a vocal coach and accompanist here in Austin. When he isn’t performing or coaching, Alan is a gym rat in the mornings and a dad to two cats and a puppy somewhere in between.
